Laptops :: Live CD problem
There's probably just something simple I'm missing, but no matter what option I choose for booting the live CD, I get the same message: "Can't find a Knoppix filesystem. Dropping you to a limited shell." (Boy are they right. The shell is so limited that the screen won't even follow it when the commands reach past the bottom of the screen! Whoops!)
Now isn't this a live CD? Shouldn't I not need any particular filesystem? What small but significant detail am I missing? If I could run fdisk, I could make myself a new filesystem. Is there any way to get to fdisk from the live CD that I don't know about?
It could have something to do with the somewhat unusual system I'm using:
A Sony Vaio PCG-C1X mini laptop. 266mghz Pentium II, 64 megs of RAM, 1024 x 480 display, and a PCMCIA CD-ROM, which caused some problems at first but solved with the pci=off command.
Anyway, anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

My guess is that its the "PCMCIA CD-ROM" - the livecd does not search pcmcia by default afaik...
If DSL can read your pcmcia drive, try booting with "dsl frompcmcia"
I'm no expert, but I've got the same problem with a CD that I burned myself.
It turns out that the KNOPPIX directory and (within it) the KNOPPIX file were burned with lower-case names. The result is that I get dumped into the limited shell you describe.
The cure is to burn the CD over again taking care to use upper case letters.
Your problem could, of course, be different.
At boot prompt try :
dsl ide2=0x180,0x386
Ah a picturebook, if I recall, I used the following:
boot: dsl ide2=0x180,0x386 pci=off vga=normal
In order to use the full 1024x480 screen you will need the XFree86
extension. I use the .unc as the picturebook does not have much ram
The .unc version has config file for the pciturebook 1024x480 that I use
