Laptops :: IBM 390, can't turn lcd screen off

Please help.

xset s reset
xset s on
xset s 2

i have the above 3 lines of code in a small script. I am able to run that script on my dell laptop and that turns off the lcd backlight. This does nothing on my ibm thinkpad 390.

Any ideas?
