Laptops :: IBM 560X Sound Config

I have an old IBM 560X that I have never been able to get the sound working on.  I found a vintage year 2000 post on configuring the 560X for use with Debian.  To get the sound working they list:

/etc/modules

cs4232 irq=5 io=0x530 dma=1 dma2=0
opl3 io=0x388

/etc/modutils/aliases

alias sound cs4232
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options cs4232 irq=5 io=0x530 dma=1 dma2=0

The original post was at: http://www.home.no/oleaa/thinkpad560x.html

In typical newbie fashion, I just added these lines to the respective files and re-booted with no success.  In other searches I've seen mention about having to recompile the kernel to get this to work.

Can someone please help on what, if anything, I could do (that's also within my limited capabilites...) to get this to work??  Do I need to load some kind of cs4232 driver????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Max

Sure,
I have posted the fix in the forums, so feel free to run a search
for "cs4232"  in the forums for more details..

I don't know what type of install your operating with..
A HDInstall requires less maintenance than a
frugal/poormans/liveCD install for surviving a reboot..

Regardless of the type of install, for now, try typing these lines in a root shell,
just to see of these settings work for you..

" rmmod soundcore "
" modprobe uart401 "
" modprobe cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5 "

When you run these lines one at a time, you should see no errors,
simply a return to the prompt awaiting the next line ..

Exit your root shell ..
Now exit X by using the ctrl-alt-bksp combination ..
Restart X by typing "startx"  at the prompt.

Hopefully, you should see the wmix dockapp in the lower right hand corner..
Bring up XMMS, and try playing an MP3..

If this works, the easiest way to make this permanent is to
copy the lines you used in the root shell to your "/opt/bootlocal.sh" file ..
Make sure the line "opt/bootlocal.sh" is in your "/home/dsl/filetool.lst" file ..
Then run your usual backup to wherever partition.
When you reboot, include the "restore=hd??" location of your backup
in your startup commands..
Your soundcard config will be loaded automatically.

If your running a HDInstall, adding the 3 lines to /opt/bootlocal.sh is all you need.

Let us know how it goes for you..

Thank you SOOOOO much.  You don't know how many posts I've searched for around the net trying to get this to work!!!

I had searched this forum under"IBM 560" trying to find something because it seems each model is so different.

This is really great!

Thanks again.

I really love this distro.  I've dumped three others and use this exclusively for my desktop machines now.

Works for IBM Thinkpad 560Z as well. :)
really ?  ???

hmmm.... I'll post back if this works for a Stinkpad 600E.
