Laptops :: Compaq4120 sound issues

I have DSL running on this Compaq 120MHZ Pentium 48Meg memory No CD. It's HD installed.. Works great, except that I can't get sound to work. I had really choppy sound when I did a modprob sb then restarted X; but even that went away on a reboot.
If I use modprobe -c it says I have a SB with an irq =7, the irq
