(Perhaps I should transfer this information to the "HowTos" forum?) te5torX is on the right path with "modprobe sb" but, like me, you may also have to define the driver's hardware settings because Linux fails to autoconfigure them.
And as an afternote, I recently discovered that my laptop was playing back MP3's about 4% too slow. Adding the ALSA audio driver (snd-es18xx) and using it instead of the OSS driver corrects this. It might just be a problem related to my particular Sony laptop. Craig S
