Laptops :: Could I do this?

The laptop I may get has only 12gb of space, would it be possible to buy an external hard drive and have the 12gb+the additional external?

Should be able to, assuming you are using an external USB drive. But if it's an older laptop with USB1.1, would be a lot slower. USB2 should be almost unnoticeable.
