Laptops :: NeoMagic Color Depth Solution
On old laptops in the PII 133-400mzh era(circa 1999) you will likely find a NeoMagic Video Accelerator.
The trick is on first boot after successfully installing to HDD set Screen Resolution to 800x600 and Bit Depth to 16, leave DPI defualt all will be well.
If your already installed you can try running the configurator again or hand editing the config files to reflect the information above.
Anyway theres the quick dirty answer, as for fixing it AFTER its incorrectly set maybe someone can post the how to here under this post.

Fix it after the first boot?
Easy! Just run xsetup.sh and choose your settings!

I have an aging laptop I wished to breath new life into, and I was getting a very garbled display (just hitting enter at the boot prompt of the live CD)
if you hit F3 for boot options you get a grid with all the resolutions and bit depths
Neomagics preffered offering is 788
thus this command is used
dsl vga=788
Frame buffering for me, as it defenitly doesnt like xvesa. Least it works like a charm now.
still battleing with other resolutions. All good fun.
[edit]Maximum for a Dell Latitude CPI D266XT is 1024x768@15bit (cheat code 790) I hope this helps someone.
