Persistant screen resolution in VirtualBox? - Rev - 02-23-2024

Hey, I would like to say I'm brand new to DSL. I have been trying it out on VirtualBox, and just by my first impressions, I'm really liking it so far! But there is this really annoying issue where it always defaults to 800x600 in VirtualBox. I mean, I can change the resolution using the Screen Layout Editor (ArandR) and I can save that layout script that (which just calls xrandr), and I could use crontab or edit rc.local to call that script but I'm wondering if there is a much better way to do this? I did try the VirtualBox boot option and it did not do anything. I even tried looking this up but most of the information on DSL is pertaining to the older releases. Any tips, tricks, links, guides, etc. would be great!

Hi Rev,

There is a special "Virtual Box Video" option in the boot selector when it first loads. Please try using it and let me know how it goes.

John

If I change Virtualbox's controller to VboxSVGA or VboxVGA It does look like it is trying to use the high res mode but after it gets to the tty it goes black and once it reaches the display manager it's back to 800x600. As for VMSVGA, it doesn't even look like it is attempting to output the higher resolution.

I have to spend some time using VirtualBox. I have been using Qemu for my quick ISO testing. Perhaps someone else in the mean time will have some help for you?

Virtual machine menu > View > Virtual Screen 1 > Resize to 1440 x 900 (or whatever). This should be persistent. HTH

These options are all greyed out at my end ..

Yeah the 800x600 in Vbox has been consistent here, too, irresp of boot settings, but the video configs work right when booting on the real machines (not VM) and upon first boot after installation. Sorta used to that happening, honestly, with many distros over the years and didn't even really think about it at all until reading this thread. FWIW.
