First of all, thanx very much to all who work on DSL.  Version 2.2b is a winner.  USB function is a major issue for me.  Improved performance and hot plugging are WON-DER-FUL.  Improved Torsmo script is beautiful.

As is often the case, there seems to be some new bugs.  In particular, the little graphical mounter square is funny.  Sometimes it shows up in far upper left screen corner with a blank white square in lower right corner.  Yes, I did mess with .xinitrc  -  added wmcalc and wmclock/calendar.  I like wmcalc.  Can live with wild mounter....

The thought occurred to me that I would rather have a desktop  icon to call up the mounter because you have to do that enyway when you plug in  something USB, and I rather like haveing two mounters for the same reason I like two panes on file managers.  Put an icon on the desctop.  Leave nothing in right corner.  Anytime anybody wants one or more mounters, they cliclick the icon....

Taming the wild mounter:
Please try this command in your .xinitrc

wmswallow -geometry 70x80 docked docked.lua &

Hopefully this single line command will need not to sleep and will work more consistently.

Anyone experiencing the above mentioned issues please post feedback on this, as I would like to have this working well for the next release.

Thanks

I'm also thrilled with DSL. I hope to get some nearly free computers set up for underprivileged kids one day using DSL in a no hard drive "dsl toram" configuration using pen drives for each kid. I also am considering the same sort of set up for elderly. First thogh I need to get competent myself...

I have seen the mounter tool appear on occasion near the upper left side of the screen. I have to reboot to get it to return to the lower right. It wont drag with the mouse.

My system is a small gateway PII-350 (BX chipset) that I upgraded to a 450 and put 512Mb of ram in I also phsically modified a Diamond Viper 770 so it would fit into the AGP slot. There is no hard drive and I use a pendrive to store data.

The mount tool sees the pendrive as sda1 and very quickly switches between the pink "unmounted" to the green "mounted" status. However it's awkward to get into the file system through the Emelfem tool. Saving a file from an application works well though.

I tried Knoppix because it showed up during the boot of DSL.  Knoppix shows an icon for the pen drive on the desktop. You can click that icon and explore the pen drive quite easily. I'd like to see that happen on DSL.
(Knoppix wouldnt boot "toram" in 512Mb so i havent switched to knoppix)

btw I dont know how to follow the reccomendation
:
"Please try this command in your .xinitrc
wmswallow -geometry 70x80 docked docked.lua &"

I'll probaly finsd out as I read through the site.

It would be nicer though if an icon for the pen drive popped up on the desktop.
I'd also like to see the sam if there is a hard drive in the computer. I had a terrible time trying to get access to a hard drive with DSL. I could load DSL on the hard drive and boot from it. I couldnt find a way to save files on the hard drive even though the mount tool seemed to see and connect to the hard drive.
All files I tried to save had to go to the pen drive.

On another tack: Making a jukebox, putting in a  music CD and rip files to HD was made very difficult by the lack of nice clickable icons that I could open the CD and HD then drag files to the HD.

I find a program to rip songs to HD in uncompressed format. However i was able to quickly fill my pendrive...

DSL is cool I'm excited about learning more..

.xinitrc is a hidden file in the top of the /dsl directory. You can find it and see it easily with the EmelFM file manager by clicking the "H" in the upper corner to reveal the hidden files.

The .xinitrc file is a script that controls what is opened and how it is opened when the X server window manager loads. That's also the place you will file the line that controls the "Getting Started" page. Once you have read the page several times and understand it, then you can put a # in front of the dillo line in .xinitrc to stop the page from popping up.
