Any help & suggestions much appreciated!

I have multiple partitions on my hard drive, so that I can have a "known good" OS, while playing around or upgrading. So, on one partition (I think it's hda2 - I'm at work right now) I have DSL 4.2.5 frugal install and on the other I've been trying to get all the releases since then to run.

My problem with every release since 4.2.5 is that while it boots the initrd from the correct location, it always churns for a while before eventually booting the kernel from 4.2.5 on hda2. It seems like it can't find, or can't read, the newer kernel.

I realize the GRUB entries would be of interest - I'll add them when I get home (although to be honest I've used GRUB for a while and it looks fine to me).

DSL 4.2.5 is of course great - but I really do like the new MyDSL browser and would like to upgrade to the latest and greatest! Any ideas much appreciated!

thanks, Magnus

You probably mean the knoppix file and not the kernel? And the install you'd want to boot is in a higher-numbered partition than hda2?

If this is the case, fromhd=/dev/hdaX is your option, forces to look there first.

I don't recall if the newer version is on a higher partition number - could be. It could also be on hdb..

You're right - I do mean the KNOPPIX file - but the GRUB entry has 2 lines - one which starts initrd and one which starts with kernel.

For both of the lines in the GRUB entry, I preceded the line with (hdx,y) - which I thought would force it to boot from my preferred device.

But I'll try passing the cheatcode "fromhd=/dev/hdaX" and see what I get..

DSL's boot is two-staged - first the kernel and initrd are booted using a bootloader like grub, then they search for the main pack on all available drives.
This allows booting from nearly anything to anything, like from floppy and having KNOPPIX on a usb stick, on a natively non-usb-bootable computer.

(hdx,y) only tells grub where to look, this information won't get passed on.

In that case - I am officially really looking forward to going home and giving this a try!! It sounds promising  :)
