Hi mojo,
First, let me say that there is nothing proprietary in DSL as far as I know.  All the script hacks I do are GPL -- as I believe all the scripts in Knoppix are.

Now, when we are talking about source it gets to be a tricky matter.  Most of the binaries in DSL are from Debian,  and the sources for those applications are downloadable from hundreds of Debian mirrors.  The source code for the Kernel has been deleted from DSL to make room for more applications.  I haven't needed it for anything I've done.  I have it sitting on my hard drive and I can make it downloadable, but it is also available from many places on the internet, and it is included in Knoppix proper.

It is relatively easy to extract DSL onto your hard drive -- there is a great howto at www.knoppix.net.  Once you have the extracted iso sitting on your hard drive you basically have what I use to build the subsequent releases.  I make modifications and run a simple shell script to generate new ISOs.  There is a lot of very good documentation on how to do this at knoppix.net.
