i thought the same way as you did first, but in fakt, there are no 2 partition neccessary. only 1 is enough. copy your DSL on it and use the rest of the space for your backups.
how to make it boot? well... i'm still working out. mine doesnt start the same.
-are you sure that your usbdrive ist bootable? some are not!!!

I modified linuxrc in miniroot.gz .I changed DEVICES="dev/hd?" to DEVICE= "dev/sd?" etc....
it works fine, i can boot on usb.
After i modified backup.sh to save my configuration on my key.
