I always thought a swap partition was a good idea, since I started out using Redhat Linux 6.1 on a machine with only 32 mb of ram. Wow, did it ever use the swap area! --- Even on a fairly fast 200 MMX with 128 MB ram, under heavy use, DSL will use some swap, especially if you are running MozillaFirebird, and have a couple of Scite editors open, and have put in several hours at it. --- If you have other Linux distros on your hard drive, then DSL will pick up all the swap partitions, and use them. I have a 20 GB hard drive with over 16 partitions on it, and DSL winds up with a very big, although largely un-needed swap area. You do not have to do anything to set it up, DSL picks up the other distro's swaps automatically. --- Now, if you have a bunch of ram, say 256 MB or greater, and have a fast processor, then you won't need a swap partition. I have one machine with 1 GB of ram, and it goes along ok running off the CD. --- Guess what can make an older machine outrun that? (running off the CD, that is) A hard drive install, as outlined here: http://www.angelfire.com/ms/telegram/general_howto --- If you are setting up an old 500 MB hard drive to use with DSL, just make three partitions, and follow the directions in the last half of the howto. You could set the little drive up as a slave hdd, and still keep your Windows XP drive untouched! ( I recommend that, leave the big drive with that Expen$ive Microsoft XP alone) ---
