... I'm trying to work off this cute little laptop while my "regular" rig is in the shop.l

... For my job I have to run AIM; so I tried installing GAIM.

... In the process, I deleted everything in the "proc" file.

... What do I do now?  Nothing will install at all.

... Gleep.  Help.

This is just guessing again, but...

If you're running liveCD, just reboot.
If you have a harddrive install and can boot from CD, maybe you can boot liveCD, mount the drive, and copy proc over to your harddrive install.

If this is a bad idea, someone please let us know, thanks.

It's not bad at all--being responded to--I mean.

I'm having random software problems all over this Linux laptop. I'm ready to use this laptop as a boatanchor.

Keyboard jumps out of the line of type. "Writer" can't cut and paste, shuts down without reason.

I guess, what my question is at this point is, WHERE is another, different text-editor programs for this OS??

I surely need to load another one.

Glad to find a place where I can at least ask questions.

Have a nice day, and I hope you'll stick around.

Try abiword.

It seems to be well regarded by most, but it uses more RAM and disk space.  Not nearly as much as Open Office but more than the default editor.

Also, Ted works well for computers that have limited RAM/space.

Open Office runs OK with 256 MB of RAM.
Not all computers are going to have that, or a swap file set up, so I did put a
dialog box that comes up asking for a confirmation on starting Open Office
in my Knoppix Remaster.
I've been using the SciTE editor in DSL for quite a while, and find it very nice, so
I put that in my remaster also. Never had SciTE crash, either in DSL or my Knoppix Remaster. SciTE is not a word processor, however, and cannot select various fonts like KDE's Kate can, for instance.
:D
