i used original knoppix for a while, and one of the great things about knoppix is that it does NEVER touch your harddisk. so i can not mess up my windows. and it does never install files automatically to my harddisk.

Does Damn Small Linux have that same ability?

And before i forget: is there a decompression tool included to decompress ('unzip') tar.gz files in DSL?

Yes. DamnSmall Linux is designed to be a liveCD. It will not install anything to the hard drive. It also allows to save your configuration files to floppy or a usb pen drive. It has decompression programs to handle tar.gz files and zip files.

There are speed advantages and ability to do without a USB pen drive by installing some files on the hard drive. If you work on one computer, then this may be the way to go, or at least try. I have an outline on doing this here:

You won't hurt your hard drive, in fact, running Damn Small Linux in the way described is much easier on your hard drive than Windows.
Windows 98, for instance, is pretty rough on your hard drive

To be honest, there are two drawbacks to my method:
l. Hard Drive needs another partition, impossible for most without something
like Partition Magic.
2. A boot floppy is required to start Damn Small Linux in my setup.

The speed benefits are there, especially on older machines. I have this
running now on a 200mmx processor, and it flys along faster than XP
on a P4.
