It's not a replacement, but an option.  fluxbox-0.9.11.tar.gz will install in /opt, and it uses its own set of configuration files so it will not upgrade or change any part of the existing fluxbox.

There is also a uci version of fluxbox 0.9.14, which is a little better optimized than 0.9.11.  However, it uses the default /home/dsl/.fluxbox configuration files instead of its own configs.

Is there any noticable advantage to the newer version of fluxbox?

There is not, in my opinion, much advantage to using the latest fluxbox if your focus is primarily on speed, size, and stability.  Fluxbox 0.1.14 is a solid piece of work that still rivals most other small window managers, and as with any other piece of software, added features means added size and memory usage.  However, there are many more features available in the newer Fluxbox.  Most are probably not immediately noticeable, but if you are accustomed to tweaking fluxbox configs you will definitely notice several changes and improvements in its configuration.

Personally I keep fluxbox updated on my suse and slackware systems, but in DSL I often don't bother to install the newer version because flux stable is still sufficient for my needs.
