Being a newbie I'm quite excited that I have got my Vaio C1VN to run full screen (1024x400, 16) ... Yippie!!

A few questions to those that know:

When the screen is first drawn I get an increasing to complete white out almost as if the screen is about to burn out... It's scary at first.. does anyone know why this is happening? (This doesn't "seem" to happen when DSL boots into it's normal VGA settings..)

It only takes about 4 or so seconds then the desktop appears but I'd rather not subject the screen too much of this.

It also seems that after a while of no mouse \ keyboard activity the screen whites out again... I assume screen saving..

How do i turn this behaiviour off for the moment?.. More specifically which file and where controls this behaiviour? (If this setting is stored in a multifunctional file can switching this behaiviour off be scripted into a separate file somehow?) (Here I lack the Linux language but I guess I mean config or batch type files.)

The whiting out during no activity is far more severe than boot as it would last longer if not stopped.. Is there an alternate screen saver (moving images.. etc..) that could be used?

I also note none of the screens function keys work in DSL.. Is there a simple way to control brightness of screen for laptops or is this also very machine specific?

Last thing: After messing around for ages and constantly having DSL crash I decided to hack my solutions into their relevant places in backup.tar using my windows PC..

This drops everything into place when DSL boots and works great.. but when I have solved a few problems that still remain (the desktop is stretched rather than filling the screen) I'd like to turn the solution into a simple .myDSL package so other C1xx users can benefit...

Am I right in thinking these are just tar.gz\tar type packages and I can do the same I have done with the backup.tar and simply put the specific files in their right locations?

Once I have tweaked the setup is there a submission routine for a .myDSL?

Well an update:

I now have a beautiful and full screen enabled C1VN, that is properly scaled, has no problem with lines along the borders and the white-out has also gone.

It's a bit of a nasty part hack but the problem is largely specific to the ATI driver in the myDSL XFree package available to DSL.

The solution has some rather bad downsides - I can't go to text mode and shuting down is a little wild - but as I need the full screen for using Linux rather than tweaking it in text mode I can enable and disable at will via a reboot.

Still it was worth the hassle for what I learnt. Now just to work through fully updating XFree for the C1xx..

If only Loadlin worked I would be well setup.. but that is borked on the C1xx also :(

Hi,

I'm a newbie considering using DSL on my C1VN as well, as I would like to get squeeze some decent performance out of it.  I've heard it's hard to get linux installs working because of the odd screen size, but it looks like you have gotten it up and running pretty well.  Would you mind sharing some more details of how you have managed to get things working?

Were you able to put your changes into a package that us plebes can simply install?

Thanks,
-ak
