I am trying to run dsl on an old Thinkpad 365X, and I can't get the default xserver to give me correct colors on my LCD. I know that xorg works, because the system has a working Debian installation on another partition. I'd like to install XFree86 so that I can use DSL and still have correct video.

I have a full hd install of dsl (not frugal), and installed xserver-xfree86 using apt-get. The server installed OK, and I'm pretty sure it is working because if I run the Xfree binary directly, I get the expected startup display.

However, even using dpkg-reconfigure, the install does not update startx or  the "X" link, which still start up the default xserver. What do I need to do so that typing startx gives me the same desktop as the default, but using xfree86 as the server rather than xvesa?

I cannot install the XFree86.dsl extension because the machine doesn't have enough memory. I need to install the entire setup to disk.

Thanks for any suggestions, or a pointer to install instructions. I'd just like a way to do manually what the Xfree.dsl extension does using the cloop setup.

Thanks. That solved most of the problem. It is also necessary to set the suid and sgid bits for /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (chmod 6755).

Still having some mouse difficulties, but the server launches and gives me the fluxbox desktop with the correct colors.
