Hi,

Is it possible to move one's display/system settings from Ubuntu to DSL?

I was wondering if anyone out there could give me a micro tutorial on how the display system in DSL works and what files are responsible. I did a search on the wiki but there’s only a few topics and no overview.

Thanks

John

DSL has a very small and very basic X server. Display settings in DSL are commandline options stored in /home/dsl/.xserverrc.  What you have in Ubuntu is probably XF86Config or xorg.conf in /etc/X11.  The only way you will be able to use those settings in DSL is to install XFree86

I gave XFree86 a bash but the default XF86Config-4 file for an ati card didn't do the trick (white screen on boot).

What's the best way to configure the XF86Config-4 file?

I had a bash comparing my ubuntu xorg.conf file to the above XF86Config ati file, is this the best approach or is there a magical utility that will probe my hardware and spit out a lovely DSL compatible XF86Config-4 file?

my system is a sony vaio pcg-141c laptop.

From what I've seen so far DSL looks great, so much faster than ubuntu on an old machine!

There's a xf86config.dsl package that will help, although you need to know what hardware you have (it won't autodetect).

It might be worth a shot just copying your ubuntu xorg.conf file over to DSL.  There are probably some settings in there that don't apply, but as far as I know it should still be compatible with xfree86
