I could install icewm but it doesn't appear in the window manager menu as I expect it ought to logically.

I installed xdm and hopes this gives me the option to run icewm and I hope it fixes the issue with minimized applications.

huh? are you sure you're clicking the right one to minimize? both fluxbox and jwm have a icontray for minimized apps. how about some more info(your setup,version,...)?

Icewm is a uci extension, which is not categorized by type of program

Turns out the display resolution was the reason.

I reduced it to 800x600 and then I got the full screen on the labtop.
