Hi,

I have installed DSL on:
Pentium I
16Mb RAM
300, 200 HD
diamond VIPER pro (I've heard someone screaming)
ordinary mouse (many of them) on COM1

X starts OK, though just 640x480 (because SiS=Viper is not 100% native, as it say during startup.),
but my mouse (none of them, all simple/cheap ones - 3button)  doesn't work.

Computer has only one COM port, connected at COM1 on motherboard.
I tried to change this to COM2 on motherboard, then reversing cables, every possible combination, still nothing.

Mouse doesn't get regonized during CD start nor by hd install & xsetup.sh.
XF86Config file has /dev/ttyS0 as device, while /home/root/xsetup file is made by xsetup.sh.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

BTW, which file is for manually changing X settings?

xsetup is the file that is used for changing X settings. Try chaning the "/dev/psaux" part of the command line to read "/dev/ttyS0" or "/dev/ttyS1".

Good Luck.

PS: There have been reports the DSL sometimes gets confused and assigns the wrong port number to the physical COM port.  IE: Port is labeled "COM1" on the back of the computer case, yet it somehow gets defined as /dev/ttyS1 in DSL instead of /dev/ttyS0.

Howdy,
I too had this problem, with DSL 6.01 but strangely not with 0.5.2 - both versions were installed to the Hard Drive.

I fixed this by logging in as "root" and once the desktop had displayed [and the mouse cursor was unmovable] I held down the "Ctrl and Alt" keys then hit "Backspace".

The x-window desktop disappears and a command line prompt appears. At that point type in "mouseconfig" [without the quotation marks] and then proceed to choose the correct options for your mouse.

I have a genuine MS Ergonomic Serial Mouse 2.0A that sits on ttyS0 (com1) and it did not get recognised before I did this.
Then next trick is to get back to the nice GUI desktop. This is easy, just type "startx" - [yep, you guessed it, without the quotation marks].

Just an addition for those folk who are booting from the CD each time they use DSL and have not done a HD install like I referred to above:

You will automatically be a "user" called "damnsmall" and if you exit the GUI desktop as I described below you will have to be the "root" user to have the appropriate permissions / rights to effect the changes selected with "mouseconfig".

Type "sudo su" at the command line prompt.
- then type "mouseconfig"
- make the appropriate selections, etc.

When you have exited the "mouseconfig" screens and find yourself back at the command line prompt, type "exit" to return to being just the "damnsmall" account user.

Then type "startx" as described above to return to the GUI desktop. Messy, but it does make that mouse cursor move !
