I don't have a solution, but if it helps you feel better I'm having the same issue with my Canon Innova 350CD notebook. I seem to recall Windows running with more colors, but the Xvesa only displays normal colors with 4-bit color. According to the command "Xvesa -listmodes" my hardware supports psudocolors (not really sure what that means) at 800x600x8. There seems to be a number of posts about using framebuffering and whatnot in the laptop board, but I haven't had any luck yet. The only real problem with the 4-bit color is that some of the applications (xmms, dillo, ...) won't start up.
