You can check for error messages by running the "xtdesk" command from a terminal. I can't guarantee you'll get useful info from this, but it's a start. I'm going to guess that the problem is with the trommler extension...I remember there was an issue with it a while ago, but don't remember if it was repaired.
The most common problem with xtdesk seems to be in a broken .lnk file. Either the file is corrupted, or it is pointing to an image file that doesn't exist. All it takes is one bad LNK file to bring the whole program down.
EDIT: I just checked the current Trommler extension, and yes it is broken. The /home/dsl/.xtdesktop/trommler.lnk file is still pointing to /home/damnsmall/.xtdesktop/trommler.png.
I kinda lost interest in keeping trommler updated for DSL when they switched to gtk2. I think eventually I'm going to be left behind if developers continue to bloat up their apps just for the sake of a few pretty widgets.
