A frugal install is merely the KNOPPIX and boot files copied to your harddrive, along with a bootloader. There's no logging in DSL by default, as far as I know. You can run syslogd, but this is of course after the install and useless in this case.
Depending on what options you gave, some will work and some will not. For example, the only directories you can put on other partitions using a standard DSL install are /home/dsl and /opt. Many (not all) of the available options are listed in the /boot/f2 file. The options that will be used are listed in your bootloader's config file.
