I am totally, TOTALLY loving DSL! Now I have some projects in mind. One project will be to run my CarPC from a modified DSL (no more hard drive, yay!) and one project will be to make a totally silent, no hard drive VIA EPIA M based Mini-ITX computer for my family room.

I spent most of yesterday evening reading the remastering thread but I still have several questions and need, in general, some pointers and suggestions.........

I would like to modifiy DSL to my likings and then dump it back on to some USB Flash drives. I want the main partition to be compressed and Read-Only, which is how I assume DSL works now. I also want a "saved data" partition which would normally be mounted RO until I want to save something. A RAMDISK would be used for fast cached storage, temp space, etc, to save wear and tear on the slow flash memory. Does this sound about right?

As for modifications, I want to add Perl and Perl/Tk as well as add some basic applications (imagemagick, GIMP. I also want to remove many applications from DSL that I don't use and don't plan on using in order to save space. On one of my DSL setups I would also like to have GCC/Make for compiling software. Now I see that some of this is available as DSL extensions, but some is not. I looked at some of the Debian packages and they're HUGE!! How do I go about finding what I need and installing it without going over the limits of a 128 MB (or even 512 MB!!) flash stick? Some of the Debian packages and layers of dependencies are simply insane, they would be fine on a 20 GB HD, but way, waaay too large for a flash stick.

Please point me in the right direction. I have un*x experience, mostly with Debian and Solaris, but this is my first adventure into the world of flash booted mini distros!
