Hi,

I am a linux newbie and am very confused now. I am trying to install a MyDSL extension that I downloaded to /home/dsl/ from emelFM and xTerm as user dsl. Both installation methods failed.

After that, I cannot start any app from the desktop. If I try to issue any command from the xTerm, I got the message "command not found." I can cd to directory, but I can't ls the files. I cannot Power Down from X, nor can I shutdown/reboot from xTerm.

ctrl-alt-del get me back to the shell, but when I try to reboot/shutdown it said I must be root or superuser. But I cannot sudo su, too. (sudo: su: command not found)

When I do another ctrl-alt-del:
INIT: Switching to reunlevel: 0
INIT: Sending processess the TERM signal
INIT: Sending processess the KILL signal
INIT: cannot execute "/etc/init.d/knoppix-halt"
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

I cannot do anything after that - no response from keyboard, no more ctrl-alt-del

Any help will be appreciated.

Following are the error messages

-then "/usr/bin/mydsl-load: line 1: ls: command not found
/usr/bin/mydsl-load: line 1: wc: command not found
/usr/bin/mydsl-load: line 1: awk: command not found

I was trying to get some help with this topic but no response so far.

Hi,
what do you mean with "try to install mydsl app"? Basically, you can't install mydsl apps, you only can load them. Once downloaded, you select your .dsl package in emelfm, then hit the mydsl button on the top of emelfm, and that's it.

I don't understand why it is not an installation, I was following the "MyDSL: Installing Extensions" wiki on http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....ensions

The wiki title, and all the methods said "install". Now I am more confused.

I also read the XFree86Config-4 wiki here:

and I followed the link to download the XFree86.dsl file. I've checked the md5sum and they match.

Followed instruction to change .xserverrc to "exec /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -nolisten tcp", after many hours finally figured out .xserverrc is a hidden file and how to access it.

Created XF86Config-4, modified the .filetool.lst to include a 560E-specific /etc/X11/XFConfig86-4 according to this post, a successful 560E XFree86 installation:

I found another post about "no space left on device" error that is sort of similiar to my problem,

but that didn't solve the problem either.

I've followed mikshaw's XFree86 installation instructions here:

safesys and mast's instructions:

I've added the cheat code to grub boot:

kernal /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda2 quiet noacpi noapm noscsi furgal dma restore=hda5 home=hda5 opt=hda5 mydsl=hda5 host=BOX

I've moved the XFree86.dsl file to hda5/home/dsl/myDSL when I use grub to boot, and I made sure XFree86.dsl is set to user: dsl, group: staff, and the myDSL folder permission is rwxr-xr-x

Reboot, cannot start Xserver:

/home/dsl/.xserverrc: line 1: /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86: No such file or directory
/home/dsl/.xserverrc: line 1: /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86: cannot execute: No such file or directory
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

.xserverrc line 1 led me to concluded that XFree86 need an installation. But I couldn't install it.
