If I save my settings to a USB stick, does that usb stick need to be formatted to fat16 or fat32 format?

I remember having problems loading settings from USB stick wich was formatted to ext3.

I don't think it matters, as long as it's a filesystem that DSL can read/write.  I would guess that your problems were instead of, or in addition to, the filesystem used.

ext3 is backwards compatible with ext2, so DSL should be able to read from that usb stick (mounted as ext2)
