This depends on how you use your cd. In your case, it sounds like you tried to access your hard drive contents and _possibly_ messed something up. Though I would place a greater bet that that win98 wasn't shut down properly.
WinXP uses ntfs by default, and DSL can only have read-only access to it (unless of course, you have some vfat partitions or download some extra ntfs utilities to DSL)
So all-in-all, it should be safe.
