When I used the Live CD on my other computer, it worked OK. But when I started again without it, the Windows 98 had to enter safe mode and had a few new errors (not that I cared).

Now I am considering to try the Live CD on my newer computer, but I don't want it change anything.  If I put in the CD and turn on the newer computer, then will it run DSL without altering my XP at all?

This depends on how you use your cd.
In your case, it sounds like you tried to access your hard drive contents and _possibly_ messed something up.
Though I would place a greater bet that that win98 wasn't shut down properly.

WinXP uses ntfs by default, and DSL can only have read-only access to it (unless of course, you have some vfat partitions or download some extra ntfs utilities to DSL)

So all-in-all, it should be safe.
