I'm in need of some help with the overview of applying a patch to DSL 3.0.1 - hopefully his will help me work out the details of exactly how to do it.
If I understand correctly, the steps are:
1. Preparation - create /usr/src, download the appropriate kernel source files and unzip to /usr/src. Apply the Knoppix kernel patch to the kernel source files.
2. Patch - download the patch you would like to apply to DSL and unzip to /usr/src. Apply the patch to the kernel source files.
3. Post patch - Install gcc.dsl, apt-get install gcc-2.95 and change directory to /usr/src/linux. Make mrproper, make oldconfig, make menuconfig, make dep, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install.
4. Remaster - create a new compressed KNOPPIX file containing the original DSL files plus the original DSL files modified by the patch plus the new files created by the patch.
I would be grateful if somebody could confirm if the above is correct.
If the above is correct then I have basically made it to the end of step 3 and am almost ready to remaster. I am running DSL from a USB memory stick and I am struggling with the following:
A. How the identify which of the original kernel source files were modified by the patch and which new files were created by the patch.
B. Where to put the files in A above so that they will be used by DSL after remastering.
If somebody could help me with answers to A and B then I believe I can figure out how to make a new KNOPPIX file in ramdisk in order to overwrite the original KNOPPIX file on a clone of the USB memory stick I am using to run DSL.
