I have the same thing happening on my old Compaq.
I boot the Live CD (either the syslinux disk or the isolinux disk, it doesn't matter which) and DSL starts.
Halfway through booting, right after something about unionfs, the boot goes awry, and displays a whole screen full of what appear to be desktop icon filenames.
It goes away too fast for me to write down, but it was something like "FILE...something TIMESTAMP (time) something WILL BE (some 7 or 8 digit number) IN THE FUTURE. " It says this over and over, with different filenames and different numbers, maybe a cuple dozen times. Then contunues to load DSL.
When that happens, the icons always end up missing from the desktop when the gui starts. When it DOESN'T happen, the icons are there, but it always happens on that machine.
Same Live CD on a different machine, boots fine. Just the old compaq does the icon bail. Which is SAD because I was going to try my first frugal install on that machine tonight!
Could it be just a read error, dirty lens on the drive or something? (Goes looking for drive cleaning disk)
Sorry to add to this thread, but I found it on a search, and didn't want to start a new one. SM EDIT: It's not the drive being dirty. I put a different drive on the same machine, and same thing. I think the machine is just messed up. Also, when I start apps in that machine, the background turns a different color?
And I tried clicking "fully enhanced desktop" or whatever it's called, and it created 4 squares in the bottom left of the desktop, but no icons. hmm...
