try plugging it in before you boot up. DSL is a little finnicky about hot-swapping stuff. some things work, others don't.
with the 2.6 kernel, almost everything is hot-swappable, but DSL uses the 2.4.22-xfs kernel (i think), so until DSL gets a facelift in the form of a kernel upgrade, somethings can't be swapped.
