I assume you mean that you've booted from the DSL live CD. I ran into a similar problem with a really old Pentium 1 133. It would get as far as starting to boot off the CD... then complain that it couldn't find the CD-ROM drive, even though it was sitting in it!!!
Try the DSL boot floppy, should be in the dloads section here. Boot from the floppy, then insert the DSL CD at a certain point into the boot process, and the system will recognise the CD and the boot process will then be handed off to the DSL CD, which will then take it from there.
