Yes, I mean exactly that. DSL will make the file for you.
When you start DSL you will see a file called "Getting Started With Damn Small Linux". It will open in a browser window. Go down the page to "Saving Your Configuration:" It tells you all about it.
Basically, put a floppy disk in your system and find "System->File Restoration->Backup". Don't worry about anything, just click Backup. It will keep all your settings. Then use that to restore your settings the next time you boot.
Just type "knoppix restore" and DSL will find that floppy. It is up to you to put the floppy in the computer at the right time.
If you can, change your system's boot order (in bios) to 1. CD 2. floppy 3. HDD
It also works with a USB memory stick.
-------------- Keep it simple.
