I have a Dell that has XP, and they name the partitions differently than I am used to. Since there is a hidden partition for restoration purposes at /dev/hde1, I ignore that, and find XP at /dev/hde2.
They must have known about Knoppix, so when I place a /knoppix folder there, the knoppix boot floppy cannot find it. Clever of Dell and Microsoft to come up with the hde instead of hda.
So I mount /dev/hde2, and I can browse around in there, but I did not try and write anything, not wanting to upset XP. I could review some images, however, using xzgv, and that worked ok.
---
I suppose one could also browse around in XP using tomsrtbt or bootE linux,
these distros are on a floppy. You would not have to change the boot order to
get them to work.

Only if you choose it at installation.
Xp can also use fat32  (though I must pretend that I know nothing about it:))

AFAIK, FAT32 can't be used on drives larger than 20Gb or so (might be greater). For the standard 80Gb disks of today, NTFS is needed - that is, if you can't get a decent filesystem like ReiserFS for instance. ;)
