You can try other distros like "basic linux" that are designed for 8MB or less RAM.

in my experience you require at least 12 MB.

Initially I also started with 8 MB and it did not work. Then I saw a neighbour placing another old PC with the garbage which supplied me with another 4 MB.... that made it work

I used DSL 0.5.3 and DSL 0.6.2
