Hi everyone!  I am new to dsl. Have a x686 32mb frugal install running. Linux newb.

When mounting an UCI such as jre1_5_0.uci it opens a window with the following message:
"please mount media containing optional dir and try again"

Has anyone finally learned how to solve this problem?
I've read some other people got this problem but haven't read any consistent explanation yet.

Me myself have battled with it for many hours but haven't got to solve it.  In my case I want to install java uci in order to use azureus.

Thanks for your help.
Luis fdo.

All uci and unc extensions are mounted under /opt/
That message is generated when the mount fails.

Typically that would indicate to try to mount a uci/unc from media which may not itself be mounted. This would likely occur from the optional menu which is built at boot time and therefore the media could have become unmounted when the choice is made to run the app. But the mount could also fail if you are out of cloop devices to use. I doubt that would be the case.

However older versions of DSL had a bug in the cloop counter which affected hard drive installed system. Make sure that you are running the latest version.

other things that may cause this are a corrupt or incomplete download, a corrupted file system (ext2 isn't the best for constant writing unless you like to fsck regularly) or trying to mount the file through a symlink.

As far as I can tell, "please mount media containing optional dir and try again" is a generic response to just about any failure in the uci mounting process.  If it was me with the trouble, I'd check the md5 file against the package, check the filesystem that contains the extension, and try to mount the file directly with the mount command.  If I used the myDSL gui I'd also change the mirror used, since ibiblio is not very dependable.
