Me again -have downloaded Abiword from the .dsl repository as Ted is a bit on the basic side for my needs. Looks like the ticket (short of a massive download to get OpenOffice).

1. It crashes when I try to insert a table or do a word count
2. Help function & spellcheck dictionaries are apparently not loaded - do I get these from somewhere else?

On my system abiword(.dsl) does NOT crash when inserting a table.
Perhaps there is something else wrong.
Which release candidate do you use?

I'm on 0.8.1.1 live cd boot. I've noticed Ted is crashing too when I try to open a new file.

I'll reboot and see what happens.

FYI,

If you want a word processor that uses less memory, try out the Siag Office extension.  It might be the combination of size and functionality that you need.

It also includes a command line MSWord-to-text converter utility.

Thanks CBagger I'll give it a try. Re memory:

I do have 1GB of RAM - however I didn't oversee its installation as this is an inherited machine.  I ran SiSoftware Sandra (a free diagnostic utility that generates hugely detailed reports, if you haven't seen it) some time ago and it didn't like something about the type of ram that was installed (can't find it at the moment). It also said:

Warning 2545: Large memory modules should be Registered/buffered.
Tip 2546: Large memory modules should be ECC/Parity.

Could this be it?
