I can't exit normally by pressing F3 or F10 I have to shut the

Is there a way of fixing this?
Of course I could use elemfm to edit files but I'm
quite used to Norton Commander/Midnight Commander.

did you try using ":q" to get back to the regular mc screen?  If this works then the editor (vim) is apparently starting but not displaying anything.
I've never seen this...editing with F4 in mc seems to work fine.
