Hello,
I have downloaded a XFree86 extension and want to install it. Please instruct me how I can install it. I cannot use X (see my posting in laptop forum) so I will need to either load this when I boot or from the text command line or any other way possible but from within X-windows. I am booting from a CD. This is not a hard-disk install.

Thank you,
regards,
Prasad

The instructions for installing that particular .dsl can be found in the .info file that is next to the extension in the repository.

Other than that, you can find instructions for how to install extensions in the Docs.

If you can't use X with the standard DSL system you might want to fix that problem before installing Xfree86, since you're probably going to have the same problem with the extension.

Well... my problem was not being able to use the synaptics touchpad... I was told to install the XFree86 extension. To install XFree86 extension, I need emelfm(unless there is any other way!). To use emelfm, I need XFree86... which I can't use!! I am in a loop here folks, please tell me a way out!!

I tried cntrl-alt-del out of X-windows which took me to the command line for user 'dsl'. I tried changing the XConfig file but that file is readonly. I need to be root to change it. Can anybody tell me the root password? If I boot into level 2, I boot in as root but cannot startx since some files are missing don't remember which. Any more suggestions?

To set the root password for this bootup:

sudo su
passwd
exit

And to install an extension from the command line:

mydsl-load XFree86.dsl
