I read the stuff on making a tar.gz extension in the non-wiki documentation, and i was looking thru the repository for this pdf howto that i read about, but I didn't see that. If it's around, could somebody please link to it for me?

It's not in the repository.  It's in the current/pdfdocs directory of the dsl download servers (some of them anyway).
