Here's something to try....

With your MP3 player removed from the machine.

Open EMELFM, the DSL file manager.   On the right side panel, double-left-click on the directory called 'mnt'.  You'll probably see directories like 'auto/', 'cdrom/' and 'floppy/'.  Maybe some others that start with 'hd' or 'sd'.  Take a look and see if you have any that start with 'sd'-something. Make note of them, if you do.

Leave the emelfm application running.

Now, insert your usb-mp3 device into the computer.

Wait a while, maybe 20 seconds...... hum a tune.......

Now click on the REFRESH button in the center of emelfm.  With any luck a new 'sd'-something directory appeared... maybe it will be 'sda1'.  That's your usb-mp3 device.

Double-click on that new directory. You should now see what's on the divice currently.

In the left side panel of emelfm you can navigate to where your .mp3 song resides. Once you've found the .mp3 file. Left click on it once and then click the COPY button in the middle of emelfm.  The copy button copies the selected file from one emelfm panel to the other.

That should do it....

There are a bunch of things that can go wrong... don't panic..... just ask more questions.  If you don't see the sd-something directory appear after plugging in the device then go to the Systems Stats application (in the control panel) and look at the 'dmesg' tab.  See if there is some error message near the bottom that deals with your usb device.  If you don't have a version of DSL with the System Stats app then you can open a command prompt and enter: dmseg
to see the messages.
Post the errors here along with the make and model of your mp3 player and someone might be able to help you.

Good luck

Actually, you probably won't see the files until the device is mounted.

When the sda1 or similar name appears in emelfm, instead of Double-clicking on it, Right-Click on it and choose "Mount" from the menu and the files will appear.

cbagger01... good point !

I don't deal with memory sticks and DSL much but I think I remember one of my units being automatically mounted when plugged in.  I just tried it with a different stick and had to do your right-click-mount routine.

I hope I didn't cause them too much grief.
