Hey guys, I've finally gotten my USB pendrive with dsl-0.9.3 on it to boot via a bootfloppy(turns out my previous disks were bad). Anyway, I boot up and everything is running ok. The problem is that any files I may modify or create are removed upon next boot. I've searched these forums for related questions and found that some people suggest adding created and modified files to the filelist file, and then using the provided GUI backup/restore tool to apply these changes. I find the filelist thing to be a pain when dealing with many files, but I've tried it anyway. The backup util asks for a device, which I've given it everything from fd0 to sda1 (both of which exist) yet the app just hangs there. How do you even use that thing?

Another thing I've seen people try to do is addusers, and someone suggested to them to use the GUI option to do it. I'd prefere a cmd line way, but I've tried the GUI method and I don't think its a permanent change either. I can't even set a password on root, if that's even root.

DSL is a great idea and has great potential, but this file persistance thing is keeping me from actually using it seriously.

Your help is appreciated.

hello.
filetool.sh is the command line utility to do backup/restore of files.
please type 'filetool.sh' from a terminal.
the device used to do backup/restore with filetool can be listed in /opt/.backup_device
so, if backing up to floppy, 'echo fd0 > /opt/.backup_device'
filetool.sh backup will backup the files AND directories listed in filetool.lst

filetool.lst does not only take "single filenames" but  also whole directories...

you can add a user by export EDITOR=yourfavouriteeditorhere
i prefer vi (nvi/vim, whatever floats your boat...)
use the command 'vipw'
however, you can also 'useradd' from the command line.
after changing users/passwords, you might want to add the passwd files to your filetool.lst

/etc/passwd
/etc/shadow
/etc/passwd-
/etc/shadow-

et s'il vous prefere /etc/group(-) also.

then your password changes will become permanent.

if there is a backup device listed in /opt/.backup_device, during shutdown/reboot filetool.sh automatically runs and attempts to backup your filestool.lst (sometimes there is a race condition involved in this, as i've found, but no one else has, so your mileage may vary)

enjoy DSL. hope this helps.
