So, the only files I can find referring to USB booting on any of the ftp sites are tiny .img files and one .gz file containing very little. Can anyone tell me what files I need to boot from a USB pen drive?

You need to download the iso or the embedded version - and run that.  Then you "Install to USB key"  That script gets the needed files from the net and I believe it now sorts everything out, so you might not even have to come looking for more info on setting the pen geometry.

Thanks, I've got it sorted.
