I want to be able to run embedded DSL from my 1GB USB drive so I can plug into a pc and run DSL. Is this possible? Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Yes you should refer to download sites available at:
http://damnsmalllinux.org/download.html

You will see that there is a version of DSL for USB thumb drive that you can be downloaded.
