I'm writing this from a machine that's running DSL v1.5 (I know, I know... DSL is easy to upgrade... After the holidays I'll take a whack at it). I really like the System Stats app that has been added. My hat is off to all those involved in it's creation.

Here are a couple things that I'd like to see added or changed.

1). The file ~/stats.txt is available while the System Stats app is open but deleted when the app is closed. Could we just leave that file and not delete it, or give the user the option to keep it with a checkbox or something?

2) Add the date and time to the display. Probably piping the DATE command to the display in the first panel would be fine.

3) Add the df -h command to the 'mounts' display

4) Is the version number of DSL kept anywhere??? I did a quick look in the /proc directory and didn't see it but it sure would be nice to have that in the System Stats also.

5) I know the kernal command line options are displayed in the dmesg tab but they're hard to find sometimes... would it be better to devote an entire tab to "boot" options??

Here's another thought...... Could we have a tab that allows user input ? Call it Problem report or Bug report or something. Then when a user wants to post a problem then could start the System Stats app, enter their problem and then upload or post the ~/stats.txt file. This would allow everyone to see all the information about the users system which would assist in solving the problem (well... maybe). I could see this as being a real advantage when Robert puts out a release candidate and users post bugs. Most of the time not enough information is posted to be of any help.

This is just a starting point for a conversation about changes to the System Stats app. If I get some time I'll try to post a modified version of the app with some of the changes.

Any thoughts??

Yes, it was always in the Getting Started, click Dillo icon or Dillo menu option, or select Help from menu. Now with the addition of torsmo I moved it in .torsmorc, but since that ends up in your backup, it may be better to put it in System Stats.

Yikes! Do you think I have that many bugs left to fix? The purpose of the stats.txt for for support.

I don't expect this will be the last version of DSL you produce. I was thinking about the future.

I think it would be great if we could come up with a list of tests to run for each Release Candidate. Maybe 25 - 50 items. Things like 1) Open Beaver, create and save a file. 2) Open Firefox, goto the DSL forum and post a test message 3) Connect to a remote computer using VNCviewer..... that kind of stuff. Then when you post a Release Candidate you could also post these Test Cases and ask people to download the RC and the tests and run them. Then post the results of the tests and their System Stats back to the forum.

Having a standard set of tests makes it easier for the users. They don't have to limit themselves to the Test Cases, they could always do more testing.
