I just made a frugal (grub) install of DSL 2.2b to hd and was unpleasantly suprised

The install script didn't ask if I wanted to install GRUB (like in "traditional" hd install) it just went and installed it

overwriting my mbr "Windows" style).. so that my previously installed grub dont boot anymore....

2nd problem with this is that DSL:s version of GRUB and my hd(=250GB) don't work together (complains something about "GRUB hard disk error" and stops) so I have to use a newer (=better)version of grub (Fedora Core4:s grub). and after frugal install the hd doesn't boot at all...

I can fix this problem, but I think that the install script should be changed so that it asks: "Do you want to install GRUB and overwrite your mbr?" (also helpful if you want to have several DSL:s in the same hd like me..)

And it would also be a good idea to upgrade DSL:s grub to newer version, so that it would be able to function with big hd:s.

And another idea: it would be cool if DSL could be able to install /boot to its own (small) partition, so that the boot loader wouldnt stop working even if the linux partition is deleted.(that is actually how grub should be installed)

But don't worry, I still thin DSL is COOOOL!! and use it in my home and am trying to make it my OS at work too...

frugal_grub.sh as well as frugal_install.sh, i.e, lilo, are primarily setup for a simple install and setting up the bootloader with user boot time options.

It would appear to me that a poorman's install is more appropriate for your installation. That is a simple copying of the system files minirt24.gz, linux24 and knoppix/knoppix and manually setting up or adding to an existing boot loader together with any boot time options so desired..
