Im going to download the new version of DSL, but first Id like to speak out on behalf of all downloaders:

why not have it in some kind of archive (tar.bz2, zip, rar, arj, etc.)?

you could reduce the download size, amount of bandwidth used, and amount of time for slower (and faster) connections (like, Im on dialup... 50mb can take about 3 hours...)

you might be able to reduce to as low as 20 to 25 MB or less!
Ive seen 200mb ISOs crushed into about 30MB... Im NOT exaggerating either (it was a zip file)

today, there are TONS of free and open source archiving utilities... why not put them to use?

DSL is already made as a compressed filesystem. Therefore it doesn't compress much further. Very similar to trying to zip an already zipped archive, not much happens.

lol, the iso cannot be compressed any further (well maybe a few 100 k for all the isolinux boot stuff). it would just require effort to decompress and it wouldn't save any time/bandwidth.

and would increase the chance of getting a corrupted download which = redownload = more used bandwidth
