I am running 2.1 rc1 (had the exact same problem with 2.0) and when I try to exit the window manager it locks up in a blue screen (and I thought windows only had blue screens!).
I am running it on a thinkpad 600e and the live-cd works without any hitches, exit the window manger and shutdown works fine.
Trying to figure out what the heck is going on I did a fresh install and started installing the components I wanted. After each component I would reboot and try to exit to see if it was the item causing problems. After I installed the gtk2 toolkik from mydsl the symptoms came back.
Any ideas?? Thanks for the help in advance.
