I have a pentium 133/73MB RAM with IDE 1 master = WIN98SE hard drive, slave = CDROM; IDE 2 = empty hardrive w/ one partition for DSL (I hope) and one for storage of data (both empty at the moment).  I run dsl hdinstall and i tell it to install to /dev/hdc1 (is that the right one?) and when it gets to LILO there is a message burried in the text about hdc not being the first disk...then it says to reboot, I say yes, it closes the GUI and gets as far as "unmounting drives" in the text mode then freezes. helpl :p

Okay I changed the BIOS to boot to the second HD which loads LILO and DSL, but DSL doesn't get very far it gives a message that tty1 is unstable and asks me for a password and login ID....i never entered a password or login ID for this what is the problem?

The password & login ID are linux standard practice and normal for a hard disk install.

Networking was at the heart of unix and logins & password gave security for multiple users.

Just call yourself vdog and add a password and boot up should continue normally :)

The CD doesn't use a login & password as security is irrelevant with a bootable CD.
If you just have a stand alone machine and don't want the chore of logging in there is a way
to remove it, but you'll have to do a search of the forums to find the posting though.

nb. Root was the administrator who had to have full access for maintainance,
but it's considered bad habit to work as root as it compromises the machines security.

I am running several boxes that multi boot Windows, Damn Small (with restore) and something else like Redhat, SuSE. Here's how I do it:

Reading all that will at the very least keep you entertained for a while, anyway.
I wouldn't set up DSL any other way, though, except for running it off the CD itself.
