I'm still having a problem getting lilo on the mbr of my first hard drive. I have a dual boot pc with XP Pro on one drive and DSL on the second drive. I've tried all kinds of things. I'm getting really ticked off cause I miss using my DSL. I know I can boot from the cd but I want it running off the hard drive. I've tried adding the lilo.conf to the hda (and hda1) manually and it doesn't seem to work. I've re-installed the DSL about ten times using both grub and lilo (not at the same time) and it still won't work. I have a copy of the "Hiren's Boot CD" and was able to rewrite the the mbr with "eXtended FDisk" but when I try to boot the DSL I get "Invalid Operating System" and I still have to go to XP Pro. I've tried ext3 and ext2 formatting wise. I've even tried formatting with one of the tools off the Hiren's Boot cd and still get the same error. I can boot with the DSL cd and the mount the hdb2 and see all the files installed but I just can't get the lilo to write to the mbr of hda right to boot from the hard drive. I'm at a loss and getting more frustrated by the day.

Have you tried the documentation on grub install from the Wiki?  Wiki...installing Grub

Hope it helps...
